HEALTH & SAFETY project manager
Fabrico Builders is developing civil construction projects in Ghana and is looking for an experienced HEALTH & SAFETY manager to join our team. We are able to offer a great benefits package, as well as opportunities for growth within the company.
We are seeking a proactive and certified H&S professional to ensure a culture of safety excellence across all our construction sites. You will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing all company and regulatory health and safety policies and procedures to minimize risks and prevent accidents.
The duties and responsibilities of the HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER will be to:
LEGAL COMPLIANCE AND DOCUMENTATION
Ensure strict adherence to the Factories, Offices and Shops Act, 1970 (Act 328) and all related Ghanaian H&S regulations.
Permits: Manage and track all necessary Permits-to-Work (e.g., for hot work, excavation, or confined spaces).
Record Keeping: Maintain comprehensive, organized records of all incidents, training, inspections, and safety certifications.
RISK MANGEMENT & AUDITING
 Conduct systematic site inspections and audits to identify hazards and unsafe practices daily.
 Perform Job Safety Analysis  and risk assessments before new activities commence.
Control Implementation: Ensure required controls are implemented to mitigate risks, prioritizing elimination and substitution.
Equipment Checks: Verify that all lifting gear, scaffolds, and machinery are certified, inspected, and safe for use.
TRAINING & COMMUNICATION
Site Inductions: Conduct mandatory site orientation/inductions for all new personnel and visitors.
Toolbox Talks: Prepare and deliver daily toolbox talks and safety briefings relevant to the day’s tasks.
Specialized Training: Coordinate and confirm all workers have required training (e.g., first aid, fire safety, working at heights).
SITE CONTROL & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Access Control: Monitor site access and ensure safety barriers, signage, and exclusion zones are properly maintained.
Housekeeping: Enforce high standards of site housekeeping to prevent slips, trips, and fire hazards.
- PPE Enforcement: Ensure strict and correct usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by all personnel.
INCIDENT & EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Emergency Planning: Develop, communicate, and test the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) (e.g., evacuation routes, assembly points).
Incident Investigation: Lead the investigation of all accidents and near misses to determine the root cause.
Reporting: Prepare and submit detailed incident reports internally and to relevant Ghanaian government agencies.
First Aid: Ensure adequate first aid facilities and certified personnel are available on site at all times.
The qualifications for the role of the HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER include:
WORKING EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 to 10 years of proven experience in a dedicated Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) role
- Proven track record in leading incident and accident investigations (including root cause analysis) and successfully implementing corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields like Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Management, Environmental Science, Civil or Mechanical Engineering
- Atleast 5 years of working experience in the construction fieldÂ
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Excellent communication and training skills for delivering toolbox talks and site inductions.
Strong leadership and enforcement skills to stop unsafe work practices.
Attention to detail for documentation, reporting, and permit management.
Current certification in First Aid and CPR is often essential, as the H&S Officer manages site medical emergencies.
